Compatibility is everything
Smartwatches typically connect to mobile phones, so your current handset will determine which watches you can choose from that will compatible with your mobile device.
The Apple Watch will only work with iPhones (of course), but iOS users have more choices beyond just Apple products. Android Wear and Pebble watches (to name few) work with iPhones.
Older Samsung smartwatches only work with certain Samsung phones, but the Gear S2 works with a longer list of Android handsets.
Android Wear also powers fashion smartwatches from brands like Fossil, Tag Heuer New Balance, and Michael Kors. Aside from Pebble, brands like Vector Luna, CoWatch, and Oliocan communicate with apps on either iOS or Android.
Don’t want to be tied you your phone’s OS forever? Purchase an agnostic device to get the best value.
Battery life is a huge consideration
If you need the battery to last a week or more, be prepared to sacrifice screen quality. Choose e-paper LCD like the ones seen on Garmin Vivoactive, Vector Luna, and Pebble smartwatch.
If you don’t mind having to charge very often in exchange for amazing visuals, Apple Watch and Android Wear watches will satisfy. Don’t expect the battery to last more than 2 days, though.
