Zika, Pollution, and the Olympics, not part of my Virtual Reality!

So you watched the opening ceremony of the Olympics, probably like most of us to see if it was a disaster in the making.  And with surprise, it went off without a hitch.  Now you’re regretting the decision you made to not attend the world’s most anticipated sporting event.  But alas, all is not lost!

If you’re like many around the globe you can attend the gathering of the world’s greatest athletes via the immersing technology of virtual reality.

Ticket sales have been reported as some of the worst in Olympic history.  In April, Brazil still had not sold half of the available seats and started distributing free tickets throughout the public school system.  With the opening ceremony done and dusted, it’s hard to tell who are true spectators and those who are there attending for the gratuitous nature of the Brazilian government.

The threat of violence, toxic pollution, increasing inevitable recession, and not to mention the Zika virus, the masses have simply turned their back on what was heralded to be the most prestigious event in South America’s modern history, casting the eye of every nation towards Brazil.

With Virtual Reality becoming, well, reality, you can enjoy up to 85 hours of Olympic bliss through the Samsung Gear VR (virtual reality)[2].  Want to see what it’s like to have a judge’s perspective of your favourite gymnast’s floor routine?  The Samsung Gear VR can do that!  Want to switch between watching team USA dominating the basketball world, but conflicted that the world’s best skeet shooter is competing at the same time?  Simply swipe the touchpad and change venues!  All without the treacherous bus ride, that with good reason, would make any of us uneasy and more comfortable from our sofa and big screen TV.

Virtual reality should definitely be on everyone’s radar.  It is without a doubt starting to shape the way we interact with the world around us.  This technology was not available to us 4 years ago, and imagine what it is going to be 4 years from now when we gaze toward Tokyo.  With big players like Sony Playstation VR (PSVR)[4] and Microsoft (Holo Lens) soon to launch their respective products, one can only imagine what the virtual reality experience is going to be.  I imagine not only can you sit on the sidelines and watch your sports hero dash to the finish of the 100m finish line, but I anticipate you could even compete with them!  Racing next to Husain Bolt or swimming next to Michael Phelps would be a dream many of us could only fantasize, but I’m sure this will become reality (well Virtual Reality) for the world.

For now, Samsung has brought the virtual reality world, at a reasonable price, to the market.  With a bunch of apps and experiences that expand your mind into the future of this innovation, I can only speculate that in the not so distant future we will be asking ourselves how we lived without it, much like we do now if you forget to take your smartphone with you while you duck out to the supermarket!

Powered by Oculus, arguably the worlds innovator of the virtual reality world, the Samsung Gear VR is delivered straight from your flagship Samsung smartphone.  The Oculus Rift, a much more powerful, fully immersive piece of technology will take your VR experience to whole new dimensions, the down side is it will set you back a pretty penny.  While the Samsung Gear VR is not the best VR experience out there, it certainly is the most accessible for a true virtual reality tease.

So don your VR headset, cheer your country forward, and wait eagerly for the next round of Virtual Reality splendor!

Go for gold team America! We stand with you, all while sitting on the couch wearing our VR!
