The three latest models due for release March 2017 include the Garmin Fenix 5, 5X, and 5S

These new models have some upgrades over the previous Garmin Fenix 3 models that include a sharper and more vibrant full color LCD backlighting display technology for better visibility in sunny outdoor conditions.

Garmin’s use of transflective lighting technology allows for transmission and reflection of light in all ambient conditions which is great if you are outdoor climbing or cycling in all weather conditions.

Garmin has also strengthened the Sapphire lens in the Fenix 5 and Fenix 5S models as an upgrade for an additional $100, which is not bad value if you are planning to use this very sporty Smartwatch in the rugged outdoors.

The Garmin Fenix 5X is the largest of the three models, especially compared to the Garmin Fenix 5S, which has been designed for use by women with only a 42mm casing.

The Garmin Fenix 5 series allows you to track up to 200 hours of log tracking on 30 routes with a robust battery life of up to 75 hours in Ultra Trac Battery Saver Mode or 24 hours of GPS mode operation.

Each new Garmin 5 series model has interchangeable QuickFit™ band options available while maintaining a sleek brushed stainless steel casing that will be stylish in the mountains or office. 

Garmin has built-in a heart rate (HR) monitor on the back and included physical buttons for navigation to the various functionalities of this amazing smartwatch. Using Elevate heart rate technology, the Garmin Fenix 5 series will monitor your HR, monitor sleep cycles, track calories burned and intensity of your activity levels.  These include both aerobic and anaerobic workout metrics displayed via the Training Status and Training Effect functions.

You may be asking what the notable upgrades are for the Garmin Fenix 5 series compared with the previous Garmin Fenix 3 Series model?  And btw, what happened with the Garmin Fenix 4 model?

Garmin skipped over the Fenix Series 4 model due to the number 4 being considered unlucky in certain Asian countries.  So you aren’t missing out on a model series going from the Fenix 3 to the Fenix 5 for those concerned with the having the latest in tech gadgets.

  3. Navigator + ABC-The Garmin Fenix 5 line has built in navigation sensors with gyroscope, barometric altimeter, and 3 axis compass
  4. GPS and GLONASS satellite reception- (Russia’s version of GPS) GLONASS in increasingly used in SMART devices and was first introduced in the Garmin 920XT. When used in conjunction with traditional GPS the enabled device delivers improved location accuracy
  5. Data Overlay Capability-this feature is expected to be very well received by avid users as it allows mapping data overlays to highlight key information. What this means is users will no longer have to switch between screens which is a big bonus if you are engaged in a high level of physical activity
  6. Multiple Sport Activity Profiles-Users are able to preload activity profiles that will cover all of your various activities
  7. Wi-Fi Enabled-For users that continue to utilize the Garmin Connect™ platform, you can get your automated uploads while on the go by tethering to your smartphone or your nearest Wi-Fi network. You can also automatically update your activity uploads directly to the Garmin Connect™ platform to share with your friends
  8. Smart Notifications-Fenix 5 Series allows you to receive texts, emails and alerts directly to your smartwatch.
