Muhammad Ali and the Bose SoundSport Pulse Wireless Wonders

Muhammad Ali once proclaimed, “I should be on a postage stamp. That’s the only way I’ll ever get licked.”

In the week that the great Muhammad Ali passed from this earth, Bose introduced a wireless wonder that may lay a legitimate wireless audio technology claim to equal Ali’s boast. The Bose SoundSport Pulse Wireless Headphones are ultra lightweight, heart rate monitoring, high performance in-ear headphones that will rock the world of every music- and smartphone-loving professional and amateur athlete, workout warrior, and health conscious exercise and fitness buff around.

A Uniquely Comfortable and Stable Fit for Athletes and Fitness Buffs. The SoundSport Pulse provides world-class in-ear music and communications comfort for athletes and fitness buffs of all types.

These tethered, 20 ounce, compact marvels of superior audio technology are seamlessly easy to fit in your ear, with almost zero adjustment required. Soft silicone material covered, flexible StayHear+ Sport extended wing tips form a uniquely comfortable, yet incredibly stable seal against the inside ridge of each person’s uniquely curved, pinna cartilage entrance to the ear canal. Once gently inserted, even the continual jarring of 14,000 strides of a 10k run, the pouring sweat of a heavy duty weightlifting session, or the g-force pounding of a high flying dunk contest will more than likely not jar these featherweight earbuds out of place – they are just that stable.

A key brand differentiator against competitive wireless earphones, the Bose StayHear+ Sport extended wing tip fit improves audio performance by not forcing each of the miniature speaker drivers too deeply into the sensitive ear canal, providing a little extra distance away from the sensitive eardrum. Along with the rain resistant, hydrophobic fabric liner between the speaker driver and the silicone covering over the earbud’s plastic housing, this StayHear+ Sport “acoustic seal” against the ridges of your ear keeps the moisture and sweat out of your ear, an essential benefit for athletes, fitness buffs, and casual exercise.

Reliable, Multi-Device, Wireless Performance. The SoundSport Pulse wireless headphones have a nominal Bluetooth wireless range of 30 feet (10 meters) from the source device and support music- or audio-streaming from one device at a time. However, Bose integrated a high-reliability, multi-point wireless technology that allows the SoundSport Pulse simultaneously to maintain a high quality connection to two different wireless devices, even within electronically noisy gyms, studios, fitness clubs, and exercise environments filled with competing WiFi and Bluetooth signals. This means that you can, for example, watch and listen to a video on your iPad, which will automatically pause to answer an inbound phone call on your smartphone, and then revert back to the iPad video you were watching after your call ends.

You can use the tethered inline remote with embedded high quality microphone to answer calls, control volume up and down, and skip or pause music tracks. For Skype and FaceTime users, the inline remote will work with many apps that use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Siri and Google Now type voice commands such as voice dial.

Accurately Plug Your Heart Into Your Ear. Heart rate monitoring earbuds are some of the latest and greatest consumer audio tech available for exercise and fitness minded consumers who also need their smartphones and music on-the-go. The SoundSport Pulse along with the Bose Connect app ecosystem will allow you to rather precisely monitor and track your heart rate on iOS, Android, and Microsoft devices during your runs, workout sessions, and athletic performances via a growing portfolio of software apps such as the hugely popular Runkeeper and Endomondo apps. Yes, you can actually plug your heart into your ear!

Product Launch. Bose confirms the SoundSport Pulse will launch in September — in your choice of black, aqua, or citron (yellow) color — for around $200. It comes with a soft neoprene carrying case. The Lithium Ion battery offers 5 hours of earbud operations. An optional SoundSport compact accessory travel hard case is available for $50 to host and charge your SoundSport Pulse earbuds on-the-go. The accessory case’s built-in battery provides up to 18 hours of juice for extended listening time, including 15-minute quick charges for 1 hour of music. The case reaches a full charge in less than 2 hours. A USB cable is included that allows the earphones to be charged from your PC, laptop, or wall charger in about 2 hours.

Long overdue, the Bose SoundSport Pulse heart rate monitoring, wireless earphones are a slick, state-of-the-art design success for athletes and exercise and fitness oriented consumers. Like Muhammad Ali, it’s hard to imagine these postage stamp-sized wireless wonders ever getting licked.

One of the challenges in reviewing VR technology is trying to convey the immersive 360 perception that is really an individual journey. You can read about the Playstation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive, but until you put on the headset and are transported to a virtual universe, it is really difficult to describe.
